Dr. Allan S. Hoffman is a true pioneer in the fields of polymer chemistry, biomaterials, drug delivery, and diagnostics. He has been actively involved in research for well over 50 years and has made numerous contributions to our field. Therefore, CRS is honoring Allan Hoffman via funding student travel awards so promising young scientists can attend the 2016 CRS annual meeting.
Allan S. Hoffman received his B.S., M.S., and Sc.D. degrees in chemical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1949 and 1957. He taught on the faculty of the MIT Chemical Engineering Department for 10 years. Since 1970 he has been a professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He continues to actively teach and advise on research in the areas of smart polymers and hydrogels, drug delivery, separations, diagnostics, and biomaterial surface modification.
Some recognitions and awards include being the president of the Society for Biomaterials (1983–1984), receiving its Founders’ Award (2000), receiving the CRS Founders’ Award (2007), and being elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2005). International symposia were organized in Maui, Hawaii, in honor of his 60th (1992), 70th (2002), and 80th (2012) birthdays. Also, four “Hoffman Family” symposia were organized in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan between 2010 and 2016 by his former students.
